PACIFIC VENTURE 1995 - 2010

Jane Allan - Homestay

The few days I spent with my host family were amazing. Although I was a lttle nervous to begin with, Charlotte and I managed to keep the conversation going. When we arrived at the house we were first shown to our room which had a big banner welcoming us to their home.

By that time we felt quite at ease. After settling in, we brought out our boasting books and presents and created all sorts of conversations! We then sat down to our evening meal which had been beautifully prepared and consisted of home-made bread, salad and fish.

The following day was then discussed and we decided to visit Miyajima - a shrine built in the sea. Whilst there we had lunch at a traditional okonomiyaki restaurant. This is a famous Hiroshima dish which can only be described as a cross between an omelette and a vegetable stir fry. We then set off to walk over the Kintai Bridge in Iwakuni City. Although it was very hot we survived thanks to a large number of ice creams!!

Our last visit was to a traditional Japanese house belonging to the parents of our homestay mother. The house was a total contrast to any others I have seen and was made mostly of wood and paper. After some Japanese tea and lots of biscuits we made our way back to Hirohima. Yet another truly amazing day!! After a short lie in we were woken on Sunday to an enormous breakfast, all of which we ate as we had a busy day ahead.
