Pre-entry Essay - My Reasons for wanting to visit Japan...by Sam Barcroft

Ever since I have been old enough to understand the significance of the 2nd World War, I have wanted to understand why my kind and caring Grandfather held such bitter feelings for the Japanese country and its people. I watched war films portraying the Japanese and Germans as cruel and vicious tyrants. But growing up in the most culturally diverse part of England, I found it hard to understand these long held stereotypes....

.....I have an unbelievable desire to try and understand his feelings, and to break down the divides between the different cultures of the world. As we see now in Chechnya, Kosovo, Macedonia and in many African states, conflict can breed long term hate and mistrust between many groups of people. As a journalist I often see the awful results of war, which can last for decades. I would like to help heal the terrible mental scars of people such as my Grandfather, and if participating in programs such as this is beneficial, I would love to take part......

......I am determined to be part of the generation that is brave enough to put aside the battles of the past, and that forges a common path for the future.

I would also love the chance to help me remember my recently departed Grandfather at peace, instead of in turmoil. A trip to Japan would help me achieve this positive objective.
